Moss Beach (Images of America) (Images of America (Arcadia Publishing)) ReviewThis last book by author and (though she never liked the moniker) historian June Morrall shows once again her understanding of the area locals call "The Coast". Though there is much more "coast" than just the area from Montara to Pescadero, what has always made that specific section of oceanfront "The Coast" (or "The Coastside" to some) is its geographical separation via Devil's Slide from Pacifica and San Francisco to the north, the road "Over The Hill" (to San Mateo, Redwood City et al) to the east and the open distance to Santa Cruz to the south. Anyone who lived on The Coast knew it as its own community. Growing up there until I was seven years old, in El Granada, my family knew most of the major players in the close-knit area commonly lumped together in the catch-all name of Half Moon Bay (though Half Moon Bay proper is five miles south) and have many stories of the colorful artists, immigrant farmers, local roughnecks and general societal misfits who tended to appreciate the natural distance the area enjoyed from the rest of society. In this Arcadia Press series of books, loaded with incredible photographs and insightful vignettes, the truncated format of the books is often a hurdle the author must overcome in order to get any substance within the covers. June has always been one to include massive amounts of detail in a small space, and did so here as well. Not that she couldn't go on, but when necessary she would get the meat of a story in whatever space she had. She did well in this book, as she did in her Arcadia Press book on Princeton.
Her imagery of Moss Beach, in words and lovingly preserved photos, tells of the singularity and mystique of this gnarly section of land with so much history. From rum runners to ghosts, this place had seen some real characters and June tells some great stories here.
I called this review "The Last Whistle..." for two reasons. First, anyone interested in this area should try to find a copy of the book by the same name which tells of the Ocean Shore Railroad and the grand visions it fueled for a time here, but more importantly I used that name because this is to be June's last book. She passed away in January of 2010 just before the book was completed. I was told by her friend Deb Wong, who, with husband Michael, took many of the present-day photographs, that there was a bit of work left on the book so it is only with thanks to her that this book made it to the shelves.
June had an insatiable hunger for the details that made up her adopted "Coast" and all who share that hunger are the better for it because of her work. Her website, [...], is being kept up by her cousin Matthew Korn and is an exhaustive source of stories and photographs of this wonderful area and often eccentric inhabitants. I'm so sorry that we will not be hearing more from June, but knowing that she is able to be again with her beloved Burt eases the pain a bit.
No collection of facts about "The Coast" is complete without this volume!Moss Beach (Images of America) (Images of America (Arcadia Publishing)) Overview
