A Collector's Guide to Military Rifle Disassembly and Reassembly ReviewI recently bought an Amberg 1871/84 Mauser rifle with Bavarian Regimental markings. The seller shipped it with the bolt removed.I couldn't get the bolt to go in, so I consulted the NRA assembly book that I keep in my shop, but it was no help.
As I studied the gun, I realized the cartridge lifter was in the down position and was preventing the insertion of the bolt.
I could see no way to raise it, even with gentle prying.
So, I went upstairs and got Mowbray's book from my library and read that a strong rapid pull of the bolt was necessary to raise the cartridge lifter. Ah! I filed a hook-notch on the end of a sturdy rod, hooked it on the top back of the lifter, gave a strong jerk, and up popped the lifter.
I probably pushed the lifter down while I was fooling around with the gun before I tried to insert the bolt. I won't do that again!
This disassembly/assembly book is the best of the ten or twelve similar books I have in my library. The step-by-step photographs are a great addition to the explanatory text. If you collect, shoot, or study military cartridge guns of the world, you need this book.A Collector's Guide to Military Rifle Disassembly and Reassembly Overview
