Penelope ReviewA little sci-fi, but mostly a hilarious character comedy about a young air-force officer in the 1960s and his discovery of a talking dolphin (with a southern accent). I saw another review that said, "This book taught me to enjoy a good martini." -- and yup, there's a lot of that too.Penelope OverviewFrom The Inside Cover:This kind of novel hasn't been written since Thorne Smith convulsed millions of readers with his sparkling wit and ribald humor. With no respect for the dignity of the Air Force and Navy big brass, author Anderson churns up chuckles on every page.Penelope is a passionate porpoise who, in the water, learns more about mankind than most of us find out on land. Captain Williams, a dedicated Air Force scientist engaged in top-secret research, breaks the speech barrier between man and porpoise. Like many scientific discoveries, this one was made by mistake -- due partly to a wild party that could happen only in Texas, and partly to a German-refugee housekeeper's troubles with a tape recorder. The rest is a space-age fantasy spun from equal parts fact and fun. Penelope has her own opinion of Jaguar, the slangy Text hip-swinger, and Lieutenant Lucy Watson, who is assigned to help Williams in his research. Lucy fills out her uniform in an inimitable way, but her boss has eyes only for science. His friend Callaghan, however, a rich Air Force pilot who owns a casket factory, has not trouble keeping his eyes on the girls. Penelope is always in the middle of a whirlpool of escapades. Nosing into off-limit waters, she becomes a potential security risk, particularly after making contact with the Russians. In recent literary history no pets, not even otters or lions, have been as perceptive and endearing as Penelope. Here is a rollicking fantasy and rare humor, based on the new frontier of science today.
