The Greek New Testament, Third Edition ReviewThis is not an interlinear edition, but an insightful, thoughtful and prayerful reconstruction of the original Greek text, complete with an extremely elaborate critical apparatus of variant readings that translators may find significant. It is the primary edition I used myself for translating all of Mark's Gospel in More Bible Wisdom for Modern Times: Selections from the Early New Testament. Of course, one can always be picky. I must admit I was a bit surprised that in Mark 15:43-45, the editors have without any qualification admitted the odd word, "ptoma", for "body". This word's primary meaning is "the remains". It is employed on only one other occasion in the entire New Testament, when it aptly describes the dismembered body of John, the Baptist. It would be most unlike Mark, whose Greek was elementary, to use such a synonym. Admittedly, other editions such as Nestle, also cite "ptoma". But Tischendorf does not. He argues that Mark used the common New Testament word for body, "soma", in this instance, and used it twice! I believe Tischendorf is absolutely correct. Although Tischendorf was consulted "to some extent" in the preparation of the text and apparatus, the editors relied mainly on Westcott and Hort, which they compared with Nestle, Bover, Merk, and Vogels. There is obviously a limit to the number of texts you can consult over a limited period of time, but I do wish that Tischendorf had been used as a primary source in establishing this text. Aside from this extremely minor reservation, however, this exhaustive compilation and comparison of New Testament texts is certainly the best available to date.
