ICE-X '86: Freezing the Cold War Review"ICE-X '86: Freezing the Cold War" is based upon true events and is tremendously suspenseful. It tells the story of a top secret American mission toward the end of the Cold War studying the efficiency of a new type of torpedo under the Arctic Circle. As the reader, we are plunged into the sub-zero temperatures and unbelievably harsh conditions with which the characters, based on actual persons, have to contend. The details of their lives - dealing with temperatures as cold as 60 degrees below zero above the ice, and confined conditions for months at a time on submarines below - are fascinating and the dialog fairly crackles with authenticity. The situations they are faced with - polar bear attacks, horrific snowstorms, espionage, incredible tension and the fear of a potential nuclear war when they come upon a Russian submarine - are realistically drawn and are tempered by liberal uses of humor.
