A Rogue, A Pirate, and A Dry Martini ReviewI am a big fan of authors who dare to go "off the board" and create a work that doesn't fit into a predictable genre, as Marcy Casterline does. Her heroine is a cancelled TV star trapped in our dismal current day where romance is long dead and mediocrity (or worse) reigns supreme in movies and television. How many of us have longed for an escape back in time? Reminiscent of Woody Allen's, Purple Rose of Cairo, she finds her way back to the golden age of Hollywood in the 1930's. Along the way, she learns about life and wrestles with the emotional turmoil all women feel as they endeavor to balance love, family, career and personal accomplishment.
Reading a bit about Ms. Casterline's own colorful life, I feel both the presence of and the deep love for her late husband interwoven into the three male leads that is both moving and touching. For the majority of us however, who will never meet that one in a million love, I personally prefer endings to books where the heroine must find meaning and direction beyond the love of a man. But for those of you that want to escape reality and fade off into the sunset for a while, then this book is a must read!
