Hidden Alcatraz: The Fortress Revealed Review"The prison itself is pornography to me," writes Peter Coyote in his angry poignant foreword to this book of photographs. "There is really nothing to say, which is why photographs are perfect."
He was there in June 1971 after the Native Americans "invaded" it. It had been empty since March 1963, and it was already a ruin. U.S. Marshals finally removed the occupiers. In October 1973, the island was opened to the public for this first time. Hollywood gangster images contributed in large part to today's 1.4 million visitors annually.
Why are we attracted to this mix of crumbling infrastructure, bloated inmate lore--the detritus of human misery?
This book is an amazing collection of 100 photographs taken by thirty-four photographers, participants in workshops on "the Rock," organized by the National Park Service and famed local photographer Robert Dawson. They stayed for several days, most of them overnight. They shot empty, eerie, haunting pictures--supernatural, even. The images evoke the extreme isolation and despair of the inmates, with the only remaining traces blood splatters, scratches on the walls, graffiti--and a physical decay--where the viewer can only wonder at the art of the photographs, which teeter between documentary style and symbolic art.
