Through Moses to Jesus: The Way of the Paschal Mystery ReviewIt is unfortunate that this book is out of print. However, there always seem to be plenty of used copies for sale. I just bought two more while I was writing this review.
This is by far the best introduction to the Book of Exodus that I know. I have used it countless times. I read it more than a few times. I refer to it over and over. It is fascinating and delightful. If you teach this book of the Bible, or are taking a class, or would like to do something yourself or with a few friends, you will not be sorry to have this short, packed book on hand to prepare yourself, or to guide you through the Book of Exodus.
You might think you know the story of Moses and the Exodus, but you will never look at it the same again. You will be fed by the teachings of the Rabbis, the wisdom of some of the saints. You will learn things about the Book of Exodus from other parts of the Bible. This will all be brought together under the scholarly hand of Carlo Maria Martini, a.k.a., Cardinal Martini, former Archbishop of Milan, Italy.
This is only one of a series of books that the Cardinal wrote like this. It is in the style of what is called "Lectio Divina." Over and above all the other blessings you will find in this gem, it is a book to help us to pray--to pray well--to pray with Sacred Scripture. If you have never done it, this is a great place to start.
Cardinal Martini has been involved in this for decades. He is looked at as a Master of the Word of God, in this respect. He is known for introducing this in his Archdiocese. It was especially welcomed by the young people of Milan. Martini devoted himself to personally offer regular "Lectio Divina" gatherings at his Cathedral (Duomo). Having a book like this in hand is as close as you and I will ever get to that now.
